DermaRoller Tips and Tricks
In this section, we will discuss some tips & tricks to maximize the benefits of your dermaroller treatment but before we do, just a quick background on dermarollers. Dermarollers are one of the most simple and effective skincare tools on the market today. They are used for a whole array of skin concerns such as acne scars, stretch marks, ageing skin, hair loss and pigmentation.
Although dermarolling is a simple concept, using it properly is key to getting great results. The idea behind dermaroller technology is to break up old scar tissue and create new, healthy skin.
We will discuss 10 simple dermaroller tips & tricks to help skyrocket your results.
1. Which DermaRoller is Best?
If you want the best type of dermaroller for skin regeneration and to encourage tissue growth, then a proper 192 titanium needle dermaroller is what you’re looking for. To get the best bang for your buck you need to make sure that the dermaroller you buy has genuine needles and not the fake disc-needle type. The disc-type so called ‘540’ needle versions damage your skin by cutting or slicing into the skin. This is NOT what you want as it causes longterm damage to the upper layer of your skin. Make sure that you purchase a genuine dermaroller for microneedling – also called skin needling for a reason.
2. Which Needle Length Should I Use?
When it comes to dermaroller needle lengths, you should pick a length that is best suited for your particular skin concern. Many advise that you start with a short needle length as a beginner, but I advise against it. If you suffer from moderate acne scars for example then you should go ahead and use a 1.5mm dermaroller. A 0.5mm will not produce any benefits as the needle length is too short to break up the scar tissue and also cannot stimulate collagen. Check out our Needle Lengths page for more info on which dermaroller to use for your skin concerns.
3. What is the Best Technique for Dermarolling?
When it comes to your dermaroller treatment, more is not better. Do not over roll your skin; 6-8 times in each direction is sufficient and remember to lift the dermaroller up slightly with each pass. You should also only roll in 2 directions, horizontally and vertically. An area the size of your face should take about 5-7 minutes to dermaroll. Also, make sure to apply enough pressure. When rolling with needle lengths 1mm and longer it is completely normal to produce pinprick blood spots.
4. Can You Share Your DermaRoller?
NO! Definitely not! It is not advised as it’s too easy to pass on bacteria and dirt from one person to another with a dermaroller since it has so many needles. It is essential to clean your dermaroller properly after use with warm soapy water, a good rinse and a spray of alcohol all around to disinfect all the needles. Once the dermaroller is completely dry, put it back into its storage container. Keep it in a dry area.
5. Stainless Steel or Titanium DermaRollers?
Your decision should be based on durability, longevity, needle sharpness and corrosion resistance. With that said, titanium needles are a clear winner! Titanium is more durable because it’s a stronger alloy than stainless steel. Stainless steel needles typically last 6 treatments whereas titanium needles last 14-18 treatments depending on the area treated.
4. Hyaluronic Acid Serum + DermaRollers
The best way to boost your derma roller results is to hydrate your skin afterward with an organic formulation of hyaluronic acid youth serum. Check out our Hyaluronic Youth Serum for more info.
Hyaluronic acid greatly enhances the results of microneedling or dermarolling. When you combine your treatment with hyaluronic, it forms a potent anti-ageing treatment that creates a youthful-looking, plump and smoother skin.
7. Use Organic, Natural, Powerful Skincare Products
You can skyrocket your skin renewal results by applying the right type of skincare products after a microneedling treatment. We highly recommend using only organic skin care products that do not contain any synthetic ingredients or chemicals as it ultimately ends up in your bloodstream and skin tissue.
When you choose organic skincare, you are choosing products whose ingredients work with the sophisticated natural systems of your skin. Given the right nutrients, our skin has the ability to care for and mend itself. In addition to adopting a healthy lifestyle, integrating organic skincare products into your beauty regime helps you achieve glowing, radiant skin.
Just as organic, nutrient-rich food should be abundant in your diet, organic, nutrient-rich products can do powerful things for your skin and health.
8. Are Shorter Needle Lengths Effective?
If you’re specifically wanting a dermaroller for collagen production, choose a needle length 1mm and above. The science on using dermarollers with shorter needle lengths are lacking. Most of our clients use a 1.5mm dermaroller to cover a wide array of skin concerns such as ageing skin, stretch marks and acne scars. If these conditions are more severe a 2mm dermaroller is recommended.
If your main goal is product absorption for skin, hair loss and to get rid of light pigmentation, the 0.5mm will suffice.
9. Exfoliate Your Skin Before Dermarolling
Exfoliating your skin prior to every dermaroller treatment is a must as it makes it much easier for the needles to penetrate the skin.
Our skin is constantly renewing itself by generating new skin cells (every 28 days). As the cells rise to the surface (epidermis) they eventually die & become filled with keratin. These keratinised skin cells protect our skin & as time passes the old protecting cells are replaced with new cells that arise from below (dermis). This is why exfoliating your skin before dermarolling is crucial – it removes the dead skin cells and preps the skin for easier penetration.
Aside from your dermaroller treatment, exfoliating at least twice a week is necessary as it helps to remove the dead skin cells that cling on and reveal the fresher & younger skin cells below.
10. What to Avoid After Dermarolling
During the first 48 hours, refrain from strong sunlight, exercise, saunas, excessive sweating, hot tubs, and sun-beds.
Do not use sunscreen as it contains synthetic ingredients which absorb into the skin.
Do not touch your skin unnecessarily and keep your hands clean if you do.
Wash your face with cool or lukewarm water only. Hot water will irritate your skin.
Do not any products with toxic ingredients such as Retin A or Retinol products. Toxic ingredients can easily pass through your skin barrier in greater quantities and enter the bloodstream.
Try to avoid makeup for at least 24 hours.
Keep your skin hydrated with a natural organic skincare serum.
11. Make Dermarolling a Habit
One common question many first-time users of dermarollers have is rolling frequency. It is recommended to roll the initial 6 treatments in succession (every needle length has its own rolling frequency), especially for scars and ageing skin. For ageing skin a maintenance session is recommended once every 3 months. The principle here is that you incorporate microneedling as part of your weekly/monthly beauty routine to stimulate and repair the skin until the desired outcome is achieved.
